Persons living with Disabilities have not been nominated to the county assemblies of Six counties in the Rift valley in just gazetted list of nominated members of county assembly released on Wednesday 28th August.

Kericho,West Pokot,Turkana,Nakuru,Baringo and Laikipia Counties failed to get a person with disability as MCA as required by law under Article 177 of the Constitution which envisages that political parties to nominate PWDs to the assembly.

National Council for People Living with Disabilities vice chairperson Caroline Kemboi said it was shocking that the assemblies will lack representation of PWDs which is contrary to the law and county legislatures is not constituted .

” I am shocked to see the Counties listed have not nominated Persons With Disabilities to the County Assembly as required by the Law. We are going to court to seek justice since our rights have been denied,”said Caroline.

Swearing in of the members of the county assemblies might delay following lack of proper representation even as the council is going to court that may lead to barring of swearing in of the legislators as from next week.

Richard Cherutich, the Baringo Central Secretary to the association said that they will not sit back and watch their rights being violated saying that there is also a risk of the county assembly not being constituted since they failed to follow the law.
