National Aids Control Council (NACC) Deputy director has said expectant mothers still deliver at home despite government providing free maternity services.
Speaking while launching Poi Maternity wing in Baringo North sub County Dr. Emmy Chesire said accessing hospitals is still a challenge to mothers due to the distances covered by mothers when they want to deliver forcing them to seek help from mid wives.
“For the case of Baringo North ,dispensaries are far and mothers are forced to deliver at homes and sometimes others lose their lives after giving birth being assisted by mid wives. With this maternity wing in place mothers will get services at their door step,”said Dr. Chesire.
While urging mothers to always deliver in hospitals to reduce infant deaths Dr. Chesire regretted that in Baringo North many mothers give birth at homes because of inaccessibility of hospital that has made the county government to open the maternity wing in the area to help mothers.
“By mothers giving birth in health center will help the mother to get immediately service to avoid deaths which can be caused by birth complications. It will also protect health of the Mother and the baby,” said Dr. Chesire.
She further added that the mother to child HIV infections in Baringo has reduced from 100 to 34 last year for the past four years but insisted that the need for mothers to seek medical attention while delivering.
