Government through the ministry of water has rolled out the construction of dams in the north right in a move to mitigate water scarcity in the north rift.
The 11billion Muruny dam in West pokot,Kirandich dam phase 2 ,Chemosusu Dam and Perekei dam in Baringo County which is at design stage are among mega Government project which is aimed at bringing solution to to water scarcity in the region.
Principal Secretary for Water, Professor Fred Segor on his visit to Muruny dam said that the region was hard hit by recent drought and with the construction of dams will enable trap and store water during rainy seasons which in return will be used for domestic and irrigated agriculture to cushion farmers from relying on rain fed agriculture which at most is not reliable considering counties in this region receive minimum rainfall.
“Water scarcity in the North rift counties will be addressed upon completion of these dams which is aimed at improving the provision of water in these region. Jubilee government has injected billions to construct new dams and improve already constructed dams so that many people can access water,” said Segor.
With the high cost of living which was occasioned by prolonged drought, the Segor stressed on irrigated agriculture citing that by providing water to farmer’s short term crops to enable food sufficiency.
The region has also been affected by rampant conflicts on resource sharing thus leading to killings and displacement of population but with sufficient provision of water and alternative way of livelihood, peaceful co existences can be achieved added the Ps.
