The caravan to market the World Under 18 championships to be held in Nairobi from next week was flagged off today at St. Patricks High School, Iten by the Elgeyo Marakwet Governor, Alex Tolgos.
The Governor said it was an honor for the County which has consistently produced International Athletes to kick-off the caravan which will go through 13 counties.
The IAAF Marketing Director, Joseph Lagat, called on Kenyans to turn up in large numbers, saying they are targeting to fill the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium where the event will be held.
Noting that sports were a unifying factor in the country, Lagat called on Kenyans to take a break from the current political heat and enjoy the games.
“Let us come and show the world that Kenyans are hospitable people and that the country is peaceful,” he urged.
He added that the games which will involve 138 countries will also provide a major opportunity to market the country.
The Governor said a total of six students, one from St. Patrick, two from Moi Kapcherop Girls, two from Kapsait Secondary School and one from Kimwoyo Secondary School will take part in the event.
During the flagging off, Lagat gave 50 tickets to the school to enable some staff and students travel to Nairobi to cheer their school’s Sports Captain, Japheth Kiprotich, who will be competing in the 800m race.
