Ahead of the world malaria day celebrations, acting director of medical services Dr. Jackson Kioko has confirmed the outbreak of Hepatisis A, Influenza, Measles and Cholera in the country.
Addressing the Media breakfast in Nairobi on Wednesday, Dr. Kioko said although Yellow Fever is no more in the country, the ministry is still on the lookout following confirmed reports of the disease outbreak in Uganda.
He attributed the disease outbreaks to climatic changes, poor sanitation and water contamination. Kioko however allayed fears that the diseases will ravage the country, saying the ministry usually sets a budget for such emergencies every year, and that they have 100 million shillings to fight the outbreaks.
He announced that the country is winning war on influenza outbreak in Nakuru with fewer cases now being reported.
He further said this is attributed to strong surveillance mechanisms that have been put in place by the ministry.
Kioko said Influenza has been there since 2011 but this year the prevalence rate has increased especially in Nakuru County mainly due to ignorance on the disease.
He said they have rolled out health education to wananchi through public barazas that are going on in the County to educate the public on the disease.
Kioko said the Hepatisis A outbreak in Mombasa remains a challenge to the health sector.
He at the same time called on parents to take advantage of the ongoing measles vaccination campaign in Marsabit to ensure each child below five years is vaccinated.
