Hunger stricken persons in Tiaty and Baringo North sub counties on Friday received relief food, water and livestock supplements following the drought that hit parts of Baringo County.
The distribution comes after the biting drought affected four sub counties with over 240,000 persons risking starvation that led to families eating wild fruits as food, livestock dying due to depletion of pasture and drying rivers that forced scores digging burrow-like wells to get water.
The government through Devolution and Water ministries toured Chesakam in Tiaty and Yatya in Baringo North to distribute food to the affected with the government saying that no Kenyan will die due to hunger as they have put measures to curb the drought.
While distributing food aid to the victims, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri assured suffering Kenyans that the government will reach out to them in giving the food that will sustain them till the drought ends.
“We are committed as a government to ensure people who are affected by drought in the country get food till it rains. I want all leaders from affected counties liaise with my ministry so that we can assist during this dry spell. No one should die because of hunger,” Said Kiunjuri.
Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa also assured the residents that they will be supplied with water during this period and equipping boreholes that was sunk by the government within the next two weeks.
“Water has been a scarce resource in these ASAL counties but as government we will supply water using water boozers to the locals. We have brought these three water trucks and they will be in this sub county till the water problem ends,” said Wamalwa.
The water Cs also announced that the government will build five mega dams in the county to reduce the water shortage during droughts.
Baringo being the first county to receive relief food the government will distribute food to other ASAL counties affected by hunger. The county received 5,000 bags of Maize,2,000 bags of beans, 2,500 bags of rice and other assorted items .
Tiaty Mp Asman Kamama who lauded the urgent interventions by government to address the drought said the government should come up with long term solutions to avert such disasters of happening in future.
