Uasin Gishu County Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno has revealed that more subsidised fertilizers will be availed at the Eldoret depot before next week after a meeting with National Cereal and produce Board officials on Wednesday in Nairobi.

Speaking during a live talk show at Chamgei FM yesterday evening, Chemno said the county government will also provide subsidized certified seeds for farmers.

“In every 1kg we will pay sh30 for the farmer. The county will also offer transportation to the farmers who are in cooperatives,” he added.

Chemno while responding to the issues of delay of the farm input said the long lasting solution is to have the Agriculture sector fully be devolved so as to allow the county to handle the subsidised fertilizers.

“We have the structures in place to the village level to handle fertilizer distribution to farmers,” said the Deputy County boss.

He also urged the national government to speed up the process of gazetting the fertilizer guidelines act which he said would speed up the process of distributing the commodity to avoid the further delays in future.

Chemno further said to end the cartel menace their is need for the ministry to capture data for all farmers and the number of acreage so that the government will know the requirement of every farmer and the number of fertilizer needed.

Deputy Governor however encouraged farmers to embrace diversify farming in order to reap more.

He revealed that a Chinese firm will soon set up a factory in the county to process Pyretrum products.

Concerning the upcoming Eldoret City Marathon, Chemno said the plans are underway to ensure the Historic Marathon succeeds.

“This marathon will nature talents and as the home of champions we have kings without kingdom, we will have kingdoms for our kings,” said Chemno.

He call upon more sponsors to chip in to support the marathon.

The winner will pocket Kshs 3million.

On matter town planning Chemno said, ‘we have hawkers market in Kahoya, Films, Langas, Kimumu but hawkers have deliberately ignored those markets and choose the trade in CBD.”

“We have guidelines and policies and we are not going to allow everyone to sell every where, we have a plan. We have an open air market which is 8 acres in west and need them to operate there, most of them have complied, we have money for them to take loan as Uasin Gishu is home to opportunities,” Chemno said

With Eldoret gearing up to be bestowed the city status the Deputy Governor said they will ensure strict adherence to zoning.

“We have a policy for commercial building, residential and for farming…we are not going to allow shanties and slum especially as we head to acquire city status.”

On the internship program, Chemno said currently the public service is now at the process of identifying organisations who can offer the internship across the country.

The county will pay monthly stipend to the interns for a period of the 1 year to facilitate the youths obtain experience.
