Deputy president William Ruto was today forced to cut short his speech at Bartabwa after gun shots rent the air the moment he was still addressing the unconvinced crowd following sporadic attacks meted on innocent civilians by armed Pokot bandits.
In the meeting that was tensed with residents armed with bows and arrows, gunshots were heard as locals ran for their lives before the Dp pleaded with them to calm as the government was concerned over deteriorating insecurity promising that more security personnel will be deployed soon to contain the situation.
This happened as teachers joined the family of a teacher killed by the cattle rustlers at Kapindasum in Baringo south, held at Kasiper in Tanyilel Baringo North sub county where leaders called for increased security.
Barwesa ward Mca Joseph Makilap and Baringo gubernatorial aspirant Stanley Kiptis who were speaking in the emotional send off said it was heart breaking that the government has not acted with speed to deal with runaway insecurity in various parts of Baringo north and Baringo south where lives have been lost and residents fleeing the area for fear of attacks.
“We demanded that the government intervene and restore normalcy and the government to compensate teachers killed in the line of duty just like soldiers, “said Makilap.
He said today the bandits dared the bearer of the second highest office in the country by launching the attacks in presence of the Deputy president.
Baringo KNUT executive secretary Joshua Cheptarus said they would not sit down as teachers are being killed mercilessly even as the teachers’ union KNUT threatened to ensure that teachers in insecure prone areas are withdrawn immediately to safeguard their lives.
In a sheer mockery of the people’s cry, cattle rustlers gunned down a Chief in Bartabwa coming on the backdrop of Deputy President William Ruto’s visit to Baringo to check on the situation of deteriorating insecurity in Baringo.
