Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday launched the first ever chicken auction at his Kamagut rural home in Uasin Gishu.

Coincidentally, this is the very same place where the DP was a chicken seller in his ‘hustling’ days.

Over 4,000 chicken valued at sh4.8 million were sold during the auction which the DP said will be an annual event just like the famous Kimalel goat auction in Baringo county.

Speaking during the event, Ruto said the Kamagut chicken auction will go a long way towards fulfilling the Jubilee’s Big four agenda of enhancing food security and improving manufacturing.

“This is a fulfilment of jubilee big 4 agenda in food security and manufacturing, beside food security, this auction will assist in manufacturing and employing more youth,” he said.

Speaking during the same event, Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago said his administration will assist in registering the chicken sellers into cooperatives and sensitize them as well as support them to expand their business through loan.

He asked the DP to to assist the ‘kuku dealers’ with a slaughter house and a cooler to preserve their products as they seek for better prices.

“On a daily basis half a million rotates between kambi kuku, jua kali and kambi nyasi. This shows their is potential of this chicken business turning livehood for people relying on maize ,” noted Mandago.

“As a county we will facilitate a formation of cooperative society and given then loan to cater and boost their enterprise,” he added.
