LEADERS CALL FOR LONG LASTING PEACE IN ELGEYO MARAKWET AND POKOT BORDERS

Death toll  in Marakwet and Pokot borders has risen to  15 people following  a wave of  attacks between warring  two communities  of Baringo and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.

In the latest spate of attacks one person was shot dead while two others   from Marakwet were seriously injured near Morkutwo and Chesongoch.

Confirming the incident during a meeting to broker a peace deal ,leaders led by former Inspector General of Police Mr. David Kimaiyo ,West Pokot Senator John Lonyangapuo and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) Chairman Samuel Poghisio  condemned some leaders for politicizing on the issue.

Speaking on Monday in Lake Bogoria Spa Resort ,the leaders lashed on section of politicians fueling the attacks.

They said those perpetrating the vice in the name of  gaining political millage should desist  and instead arrive at solutions to long lasting peace.

‘‘ It is regrettable to note that some politicians are against efforts to reach a long lasting peace. It is our responsibility as leaders to meet and chant way forward on insecurity instead of   top brass leaders sabotaging peace deal ,’’ said Senator Lonyangapuo.

Mr .Lonyangapuo advised leaders to stop blaming him for inciting the warring communities saying he is in full support to address the vice through ongoing meetings involving the two communities.

Former Inspector General of Police Mr. David Kimaiyo condemned the killings and ordered arrest of culprits involved in sale of small arms in the affected areas.

He reiterated that government has put a lot of effort in the fight against cattle rustling and brewing animosity among the communities.

Mr. Poghisio noted that the peace building initiative group was a milestone to end killings in the area.

The communities reached into an agreement that the two communities resolve , co exist and engage in economic activities on the basis of mutual benefitting relationship .

 ‘‘We intend to build a robust peace building initiative geared to finding a solution of peace among the communities. National government ,county government and security should support the effort towards ending insecurity ,’’ said Mr. Poghisio.

The meeting brought together over 100 locals from Pokot and Marakwet communities.
