The government has set aside Ksh 221 Million for water tracking in hard drought stricken counties Principal Secretary of Water Prof Fred Segor has said.

Speaking today in Kabarnet, Baringo County, Segor said the government is committed in containing the dire situation that has rendered locals without water in dry parts of the country saying already water boozers have started distributing water to areas that has been hardly hit by acute water shortage.

“The government has started supplying water to areas facing water problem using water boozers to help them get clean water for drinking, cooking and livestock during this dry season that is on alarm stage. Eight water boozers will transport water to hard hit areas across the country,”said Ps Segor.

Following the dry spell locals are forced to travel distances in search for water with others digging burrow-like wells on river beds to get water as rivers have dried up.

The PS also said the government has come up with short term interventions in mitigating the drought that has affected areas of Baringo North , Mogotio, Baringo South and Tiaty sub counties which have seen masses fleeing their homes in search for water and pasture for their animals.

“Through the government support the ministry has allocated 221M to transport water from one point to another in areas facing water problem. In addition to that, we will spend Ksh18 Million in buying relief food for hunger stricken persons in the county,” added Segor.

Over 1,000 livestock farmers have so far died due to lack of pasture and water in Barwesa, Baringo North adding that the government is equipping boreholes to supplement water supply in the areas.

“The county government has also allocated another 12 Million to address the drought as the national government is equipping 30 boreholes that will be complete in two weeks time. This will go along way in reducing the water problem in these areas ,”further added the Water PS.
