Baringo County Senator has asked Independent and Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to extend voter registration in parts affected by hunger saying the victims are now unable to get registered since the hunger has destabilized them.

Speaking on Wednesday in Baringo county’s administration headquarters in Kabarnet after donating food stuffs to be distributed across the county today, Gideon Moi urged the national government to ensure that hunger stricken residents are supplied with food and the famine situation stabilized before compelling them to register as voters.

“The drought has affected many in Baringo and other dry parts of the country this affected the voter registration leading to low turnout of voters so we are appealing to IEBC to extend the exercise to accommodate them,” said Moi.

The Kenya African National Union (KANU) party chairman also urged politicians to address the drought first before embarking on missions of vote hunting.

“We don’t want anyone to die due to hunger . It is also up to the politicians to see the victims survive from hunger then urge them to register as voters ,” added Moi.

He lamented over schools sending children home for school fees saying that the children will be traumatized as the biting drought has consumed hundreds of livestock which is the source of income to their parents.

Families in the entire Tiaty Sub county, parts of Baringo North, Baringo South, Mogotio, Baringo central are hit by drought, Eldama Ravine which is considered as the county’s food basket also stares at a looming food shotage. Families are now moving with livestock in search of water and food.

Moi donated 600 bags of maize, cooking oil, rice and beans to the county’s emergency department.

With same sentiments is Barwessa ward MCA Joseph Makilap who appealed to the IEBC to extend the vo ter registration exercise to ensure that the pastoral communities are registered.

Makilap echoed president Uhuru Kenyatta’s call to the IEBC officers to follow the residents as they move from place to place with their livestock.
