Kanu chairman Gideon Moi yesterday said DP William Ruto will not dictate his next political move ahead of the August 8 general election.
Moi said his party will decide whether to go it alone at the polls or endorse a presidential candidate of another party.
Speaking at party headquarters in Nairobi after an NEC meeting, Moi said various options will be considered on forming the next government — without coercion by Ruto and his allies.
“The DP is an individual and I’m focused on building a united and a prosperous nation,” he said. “Kanu is working to serve the interests of Kenyans, not individuals. We will announce our way forward in two weeks.”
Moi is torn between supporting President Uhuru Kenyatta’s reelection bid or working with the opposition’s soon-to-be launched National Super Alliance, NASA.
Ruto and a majority of Rift Valley leaders want the region to unite and rally behind Uhuru. But Moi has resisted the push by the DP to support Uhuru and Jubilee.
“We are looking at options available that can help us improve the lives of our people. Insecurity and hunger must be given priority. We demand the government urgently address the issue,” he said.
Moi asked the government to put structures in place to avoid catastrophes, such as drought, instead of responding to crisis after lives are lost.
“The government must play its role of ensuring Kenyans have a good life and access basics needs. ” he said.
Kanu secretary general Nick Salat said the party tasked Moi with exploring options.
But Salat had declared the independence party will work with NASA at the Bomas of Kenya on January 12 .
