Aspirants who will be vying for various electoral positions only have today to submit their financial requirements to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices countrywide.
In a statement sent by IEBC Communication and Public Affairs manager Andrew Limo extended the submission to today owing to the high turnout witnessed yesterday by those submitting forms, the Commission advised those still waiting to submit the forms to do so today, Friday 9th December, 2016, at any IEBC office countrywide.
The Commission, in its 161st Plenary Session, held on Thursday, 8th December 2016, reviewed the situation with respect to compliance with the Elections Campaign Financing Act, 2013. In particular, the Commission directed itself to Section 6 of the Act and resolved as follows:
Political parties and candidates to register their respective authorized persons and submit details of the campaign financing account as per Section 6 of the Act pending approval of the regulations by the National Assembly.
The Commission shall avail the forms and guidelines for registration at the IEBC website and at IEBC offices across the country.
IEBC had always hoped that the National Assembly would approve the regulations in good time to enable smooth implementation of the statutory provisions regarding campaign financing.
Upon further review of the Elections Campaign Financing Act 2013, the Commission arrived at the conclusion that some of the provisions could still be implemented in the absence of regulations.
The Commission is aware of the concerns raised by a section of the public on some of the provisions of the campaign law. These concerns can only be addressed by Parliament.
