Chief Justice David Maraga has said that the Judiciary is ready to tackle cases that may arise after this year’s elections .
Speaking on Wednesday in Kabarnet when he inaugrated Kabarnet Law Court to a High Court, Maraga said the Judiciary is ready to address election petitions that may arise during this year’s electioneering period.
“In readiness to handle such cases within the stipulated 14 days of presidential petitions and six months for other petitions if they arise, already judges have been selected and are now going on with deliberation on how they will deal with the anticipated petitions, “said Maraga.
He further said that the court is expecting alot of petitions as the country will be going to the ballot so to avoid backlog of cases the court is preparing itself early.
“Judges and Magistrates are preparing logistics to ensure one year after elections all disputes will have been resolved, ” added the Chief Justice.
He further said there is no need for fights yet the courts are open to file election disputes saying that the country should remain peaceful.
Maraga acknowledged that the inauguration of a high court in the region comes as a sigh of relief in the vast county where residents were forced to go miles to settle high court cases in Eldoret and Nakuru.
“I want to caution residents of Baringo against settling rape cases at home but rather letting them to be handled in court so as criminals will be charged and victims getting their justice,” warned Maraga.
He however asked residents to settle pretty cases with elders and chiefs to reduce piling of cases in courts.
Also present in the ceremony was Baringo County governor Benjamin Cheboi who lauded the Chief Justice for bringing judicial services closer to the people.
“Now the people of Baringo will have their cases heard here in Kabarnet unlike before where they would strain financially going to Eldoret or Nakuru, “said Cheboi.
A high court judge was also installed as the county will have a new high court buildings ready in one year’s time .
